Tailored, Never Tight: The Cuff & Crease House Style

A structured suit can look handsome, but it is not the only way to dress well. Our house style has a softer shoulder, a jacket that follows the body, and trousers that fall cleanly without clinging. The suit still has shape. It is simply easier to move in.

When trying on a suit, notice where it rests comfortably and where it pulls. A jacket can follow your waist without gripping it, and trousers can have a clean line with enough room to sit.

Start at the shoulder

The shoulder affects the character of the entire suit. Padding can build a pronounced silhouette, which may be just right for a particular client or occasion. More often, we favor a softer line that sits close to the wearer's natural shoulder. It can still look elegant and composed, particularly when the jacket's balance and sleeve are right.

Soft does not mean shapeless. We pay careful attention to how the collar sits against the neck and how the front of the jacket falls from the chest.

Give the jacket its balance

The relationship between the shoulder, chest, waist, and length matters more than making any one area as narrow as possible. A jacket should close cleanly and retain its line when you move. In our bespoke jackets, full floating canvas helps shape the front and lapel without bonding the outer cloth across the jacket. It gives us structure with a gentler hand.

Let the trousers fall

Trousers need space to hang well. A higher rise may lengthen the line of the leg or sit more comfortably with a jacket; a fuller leg may allow a heavier cloth to show its drape. These are decisions we make with the wearer's proportions and preferences in mind. You should be able to sit down without feeling that the tailoring is working against you.

Soft tailoring suits the way many people live in Colorado. It can be worn to dinner, to work, or to a wedding without feeling like a costume for any of those places. A dark suit, a textured sport coat, and even a tuxedo can all share this sense of ease.

To understand how a jacket can keep its shape while feeling soft, it helps to look beneath the lining. The guide to canvas construction explains the support inside the front and lapels.
